When the decision of filing for a divorce has been made, several things must be accomplished including dividing all assets. Any assets acquired during the marriage must be equally split between both parties or one part must buy out the other.

A property settlement includes anything that can be outright owned. For example – land, houses, any business you own (including partnerships), vehicles, bank accounts, shares, household items, furniture, tools and equipment, and even trusts. It includes any property you or your partner owns, regardless of whose name is on it. Any property that is owned by either of the spouses before marriage can also be included and added to the assets. Any debts must be paid off before the division of assets can be done.

Even if you have agreed on how you will split your assets, it’s a good idea to acquire a lawyer to make it formal. The possibility that your spouse might change their mind, or even hide some assets from you can hurt you in the long run. Having a legal document handled by a lawyer protects everyone involved.

The most effective and easy way to reach an agreement is doing it between lawyers without taking it to court. If it must be taken before the judge, you run the risk of all assets not being split 50/50. This can also be a very costly and time consuming avenue.

Lawyers work together to devise a fair and equal settlement agreement. In order to do this, they will look at each partys contribution to the marriage such as wages and child responsibility. In addition, both parties age, health, if there are children and any future educational obligations must also be considered to comprise a flexible alimony and child support agreement.

Child custody is usually determined by a combination of things – the child’s wishes, which parent has had more contact, the quality of the parent – child relationship and the physical and mental health of both parent and child. The parent who does not receive custody generally pays child support.

If you believe your spouse is hiding any assets, you can have the lawyer investigate by enforcing the “full and frank disclosure”. This means, they must either come clean with any hidden assets they may have or the lawyer can issue a subpoena, a court order demanding they produce all documents. Another consideration is making sure you have a tax agreement. Some of these assets might come with a big tax bill and you need to know and have in writing who is responsible for it.

Divorce is an emotional time, but splitting your assets must remain business like. A lawyer should listen to your concerns and thoughts, but work in your best legal interests. If you have no children, and possibly no property, you can more than likely file for divorce without a lawyer. They are much easier and cheaper to come by.

We often keep small mementos to remind us of specific events such as a birth or a wedding, or to remind us of people we’ve lost. It is not always easy to keep these memories safe and out of harms way, but one way of doing so is to use a box that has been designed specifically for that purpose.

With such occasions as weddings and christenings, these boxes are usually given to people who have a close connection with the people involved, such as the bridesmaids or the parents of the child being christened. These boxes then become something sentimentally valuable that they can keep for years to come, rather than just another hymn sheet gathering dust in a drawer.

Keepsake boxes can take many forms, but often are small wooden boxes with hinged lids. Beautifully painted and often personalised to commemorate a specific date, event or person, they are time capsules recording the event in question. If desired you can even have a photo imprinted onto the box to create an even more personalised gift.

Keepsake boxes come in different shapes and sizes and so you should make sure you select the right one so that you dont end up having to fold anything valuable like large photos. The quality of the craftsmanship of the box can vary greatly as well, many are imported from the far east and are not made to a particularly high standard, but there are some companies in the UK who hand make them, ensuring that they are made flawlessly down to the last detail.

Keepsake boxes share a similar purpose to memory boxes. Memory boxes are used for people to store valuable memories of loved ones whom they’ve lost such as pictures and general items that remind them of that person. It is a thoughtful gift to give someone who has lost a loved one that will help them come to terms with their loss.

In any situation, personalising a box will be seen as a heart-felt gift that will be treasured for years to come.

The reason people invite guests to their wedding is obvious. For them to witness the union of their friends or relatives in marriage and to share their joy. Wedding gifts are optional but most guests will at least bring something small as a token of their best wishes.

Some believe that given the amount of money spent by the couple on providing food and entertainment for their guests, that the guests should repay them with gifts of great expense or even cash, although traditionalists would beg to differ.

It is fairly common for couples to register for gifts with a particular shop well in advance of their actual wedding. This approach allows the bride and groom to compile a list of gifts that they will need to start their new life together, for example, china, cutlery sets, linen, kitchen utensils and other such items.

The registry method is quite often favourable to the guests who will be buying the gifts because they will know what the couple wants and know that it will be of genuine use to them.

However, couples registering for gifts will not solve all gift-buying problems. It can sometimes end up as a competition between guests as to who buys the most expensive item on the list. And there are people who don’t believe that the registry approach is in fitting with the traditional morals a wedding in that if someone doesn’t know the couple well enough to buy them a suitable wedding present then they shouldn’t be at the wedding.

Personalised gifts make ideal wedding presents. A nice photograph of the bride and groom with a personalised caption printed at the top would be something that any couple would want to treasure forever. Another possibility would be a personalised memento box, perhaps with a picture of the bride and groom on it and a personal message wishing them happiness together which could be used as a keepsake containing all the precious memorable items from the day such as a tiara, honeymoon flight tickets, wedding stationary and things that will hold sentimental value in years to come.

Personalised gifts, I conclude, are the best route to take if you’re wondering what to buy a happy couple for their wedding day and you really want your gift to mean something.
